It should be the common conception that a developer’s apps work better on the developer’s operative system. In the case of Google, you should think that Google’s apps have a better functioning on Android devices. The truth is that Google does not care so much about where the application is installed, but rather they prefer the amount of functions and advertisements and user is exposed to in a certain period of time.
The rule of thumb is that no matter what, a developer will want you to use its apps. Google aims for Gmail account, Maps and every Google app to be used on iOS as much as they are used on Android systems. But again, it is also known that most Google apps do work better on Android when it comes to limitations in settings and preferences available for customization.
One of the most obvious advantages that Google and Gmail have over iOS apps is the accessibility of content through applications and the arrangement of files. Android is a very permissive operative system where the user may open a file from any location and select the option to “share” it through a series of apps and functions. Among these functions we can find Gmail, which will open the Gmail app and proceed to attach the file to an email message. The same action is not possible on iOS. On an Apple device, one can only share files through the photo gallery.
Gmail also has a much wider acceptance when it comes to attaching files to an email, or sending files for that matter. Gmail has a direct link with Google Drive, which users can utilize to upload large files and send them over the internet through an email containing a special link. Other cloud services can perform this same function, so it is nothing to be shocked about; the difference is that Google implements it on Gmail as a default option, which gives more ease of access.
The other Google app besides Gmail that works differently on iOS is Google Maps. Google Maps is one of the most important Google services available, as it puts businesses on the map and it allows users to locate streets, restaurants, gas stations and much more places. It eliminates the need of asking for directions or buying a map that we might only use one time.
On Android devices, there’s the “Your Timeline” feature. It allows users to keep track of every place you go on Google Maps. This feature, as of now, is nowhere to be seen on iOS. Also, on Android users can create their own maps for private use. There’s also the option to set specific names to places and locations, which can only be seen by the user who set the name.
Even if you can download most Google services on iOS, the truth will be that a developer’s will almost always work better on the developer’s operative system. This is true for Google, but the same cannot be said of Microsoft.
